A.V. Fest at the Hideout, in a nutshell

Here’s the Tribune’s recap of last weekend’s A.V. Fest at the Hideout:

There wasn’t a unifying musical style per se at the first A.V. Fest, thrown by The Onion’s A.V. Club entertainment section, but it did draw an estimated 4,500 fans to Hideout over the weekend, most of who remember when guitar-driven indie rock such as headliners Hum and Archers Of Loaf ruled college radio.

The ’90s were also when the college towns of Champaign-Urbana and Chapel Hill, NC, where Hum and Archers of Loaf respectively hail, were fertile ground for a music scene that spawned artists and indie labels that remain influential today. Hum broke up in 2000, but has performed sporadically since 2003; Archers Of Loaf, who disbanded in 1998, reunited this year.
